Fans of swimming and walking will want to go to lÉtang de Leucate to the west of Barcarès (15km/9.3 miles from the campsite); its one of the most popular spots in Europe. As for culture and heritage, a trip to Perpignan la Catalane beckons. Those curious should discover the museum of natural history, the aviation museum or the museum of North Catalonia history. The museum of fine arts and the doll museum, too, are sure to delight nostalgic souls! Be sure to explore further, to the peak of the Canigou (82km/51 miles). With an elevation of 2,784m (9,134 ft.), this symbol of Catalan unity is classed as a grand site of France and offers unforgettable panoramic views. Forty kilometres away, discover the organs of Ille-sur-Têt. This curious and unusual site is made of up landscapes of strange colours and shapes, thanks to sand and clay from the great Pyrenees being eroded by water. Nature-lovers can continue their excursions to the natural marine reserve of Banyuls-sur-Mer (40km/24.9 miles) and Cerbère (50km/31 miles), just north of the Spanish border.
