Built on the summit of a hill that overlooks the magnificent estuary of the Baie de Somme, the town of Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme possesses a peaceful charm. The medieval city, whose fortifications have been partly saved, is located in the high part of the town, while the port down below exudes the atmosphere of a seaside resort with its quays and its lovely docked boats.
The sailors district is very picturesque, with its little houses cuddled up next to each other. Close by, go and discover exceptional fauna and flora by navigating through the middle of the sandbanks: seals and many species of birds can be seen. La Maison des Oiseaux in Cayeux-sur-Mer gives you some history and celebrates the heritage of the place. In the same category, there is the ornithological park Parc du Marquenterre to the north. Beach-wise, Fort-Mahon-Plage is a pretty site inbetween sand dunes and sea, and dont forget the beach in Berck-sur-Mer, a family-oriented tourist resort. Further north, Le Touquet-Paris-Plage provides all the entertainment of a large seaside resort. Visit it after a day at the nearby theme park of Parc Bagatelle. In this region, experience the festivals and parties that continue the age-old traditions. For sports enthusiasts, sand yachting, canoeing, kayaking, golf and horse-riding are also on the programme. Theme parks, such as Mer de Sable and Parc Astérix, will make your children happy.
About an hour away, the towns of Dieppe (to the west, beside the sea) and Amiens (to the east, inland) are worth the detour. Dont forget the resort of Le Tréport, where you can discover the splendid views that can be seen from beside the monument of Calvaire des Terrasses.
